Last week ledges hosted the 2012 Premiers ride with the NBFSC. and Snowmobiler television. It was a beautiful sunny cool day for the ride to Blackville and back, there was about 40 people who showed up for the 50 mile snowmobile trip including Premier David Alward, 5 of his ministers and local MLA Jake Stewart. Reps from Yamaha, Arctic Cat and Ski-Doo were all here with many types of sleds from 2 stroke to 4 stroke and touring to high performance, so everyone had a chance to try the different types of machines.

The day started with the crew from NBFSC and Snowmobiler television arriving and getting the sleds and banners ready before the guests arrived. Once everyone was here Luc “the chef” prepared a nice lite lunch for about 40 people after lunch there was a short briefing with Premier Alward about what the day was going to consist of and to introduce everyone and get them equipped with gear for those that didn’t have any. After a short briefing of how the sleds work and some safty tips the crew was off to Blackville for the 50 mile round trip.

Thanks to the NBFSC for hosting the event at Ledges and to all that showed up.

Well we finally have enough snow to go snowmobiling and the trails around Doaktown have been all groomed and everything is pretty good shape. We did have some rain yesterday that may set us back a little, but there is still lots of snow to run on the trails and logging roads. We can always use more snow and looks like we are going to get some on Friday and Sunday. The weather stations are saying 20cm’s for Friday and other 5-10cm’s for Sunday this would be perfect if we recieved a foot of snow but you know the weather it changes every 5 minutes so let keep our fingers crossed.

The farther you go north the better the going is but there is no problem to leave Doaktown and head to the north country like Governors or Sepentine lodge. The groomer was up to Sepentine Monday and returned Tuesday, the operator said the trail was in very good shape.

We have good rates to stay at Ledges with meals included for the rest of the season, we also have two cottages that we rent out by the night. If you have any questions or want to inquire about rates call me or Shelley at (506) 365-1820 or email @ ledgesinn@nb.aibn.com Thanks!

Nice on the day on the trails.

Well we are on the down hill slide towards another fishing season it’s hard to believe it is already January 2nd, it just seemed like yesterday we were still fishing. It has been mild and very wet here the last month or so, we did a have a few cold nights and the river started to stop and freeze over but a big rain last week brought the river up a couple feet and now has jammed and flooded its banks.

There is still no snow here to speak of we had about 6 inches and then the rain took most of it last week. It is calling for a high of 5 and showers today so it doesnt look like will be snowmobiling for a few days yet.

Happy New Year!!!

I apologize for not updating my report in a while but I have been busy with putting our boats and gear away, closing up camps, pheasant hunting, and I went on my own trip an 8 days in Saskatchewan whitatail hunting. This is my second year going to the prairie province and it is always a memorable trip. There were 5 in our group this year and with tons of deer we were all lucky enough to harvest nice mature bucks. With not many deer left here in New Brunswick I couldn’t wait to get back out to Saskatchewan were they have abundance of deer and I wasnt disappointed. I can’t wait until the end of november to go again next year.

Here in New Brunswick the weather has been great. We had a couple of light snowfalls but with the warm weather the snow didnt last long. It looks like rain for the next couple of days and then above normal temperatures for the next week. I still have some pheasants left if anybody is still interested in getting out for one last hunt.

I will would like to Thank everyone for reading my reports and I will try to keep them updated every couple of weeks with new events and pictures of how the river is progressing.

Well the salmon season has been over for a couple of weeks and I still hear people talking about what an awesome of season it was. The numbers of fish were record breaking as you all know by now and that should make for a fabulous spring salmon season. A lot of people have alreay secured there spot for next April-May but I still have some primetime left if your interested.

The upland season is still going very well we are finding very good numbers of grouse and woodcock, and with the warm fall we are having we are just starting seeing flight birds in the last couple of days. This season has been one of the best grouse years we have experineced in awhile. I had a couple of guests out yesterday and we had over 40 points on grouse and woodcock, although the shooting wasn’t as good as the dog work it was perfect day to be in the woods enjoying what we love to do. I have some hunters in for the next week so I will update you on how the season ends.

A nice morning of shooting.

Well another season has come and gone and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t happy to see October 15th. It has been a long busy season but it was a year that fishermen and women want forget, it started early with a big run in June and July and the good fishing continued until the end of the season. Most camps up and down the river experenced all time records for number of fish caught with one camp at the head of the river setting a 63 year old record with over 1000 fish landed. It really makes you think that all the work that the MSA and ASF are doing is paying off in a big way. Lets hope this is a start to many great seasons in the furture.

The past week we experienced very good fishing on some outings and nothing on others. On Thursday Christopher L never moved a fish in the morning and was limited out by 5:30 in the afternoon. But for the most part it was a very good last week to the season we had a couple of big fish in the 25-27 lb range and many more nice salmon in the teens. Flies of choice were Green slimes, Temple dogs, Whitetail Green Machines, and the Grape.

The hunting the past week has been fair with very good numbers of grouse and soso numbers of woodcock. Friday we had heavy rains and winds and it took a lot of the leaves off so I suspect our wing shooters will have a lot better shooting and bird numbers for the next couple of weeks.

I would like to thank everyone for reading by reports and I will be doing some hunting reports until the end of the month and then I will do a few every month over the winter. I love hearing your feedback and suggestions so keep sending them.

Tight lines!!!

The past week we had mixed fishing, the water came up over a foot and it turned very cold the water temperarure dropped to 38 degrees at one point. And for a few days it seemed like the fish disappeared we still hooked a few fish but nothing like before the cold weather and the rasie. On Thursday we were having snow flurries and yesterday the temperature was in the high 80′s, but with the warm air temperature the fish started taking and getting a lot more active. I was at one of our pools last night and counted over 20 fish jump in 10 minutes and one of our guests landed a nice hookbill grilse while I was there. It looks like nice weather up until Wednesday and then some rain and showers for Thursday and Friday so this should make for a great last week of the season. Flies that have been working best for our guests have been Green Slime, Coarse Girl, G.P, and Ally Shrimps.

We also started upland hunting in the last week and with the nasty wet windy weather for a few days it made it tough on the dogs and hunters. But all of them went out everyday and seen and shot good numbers of birds. There is still a lot of foliage on so it is still tough shooting, it will only get better as our upland season picks up in the next couple of weeks.

Tight Lines & Straight Shooting!!!

Val Antonucci with a nice hen salmon. Val arrived late afternoon last Sunday and we headed to the river in the east wind and rain thinking it would be slow but we were proven wrong Val landed 3 nice salmon and lost 3 more, what away to start his trip. See you next season Val & Lauren!!!

Well the last 4 0r 5 days have been remarkable fishing and all theories that fish dont take well in the east wind was proven wrong over the weekend. The east wind blew hard all weekend and all our guests thought the fishing would be terrible, but when you waited and got your line out in betwwen the gusts of wind you were usually rewarded with a pull or a hook up. Many of our guests had 2 to 3 fish per day and a few of them even limited out with many more hook ups. We had a full camp of anglers over the last 5 days and we landed over 80 fish and many of them were big MSW salmon, both males and females. They had over an inch of rain at the headwaters yesterday and the river came up about a foot over night. I am hoping this does’nt effect the fishing as it has been an awesome fall-season to date. Maybe this will move them around a little and make it even better. The Cain’s is still producing fish but it is low and I dont think they got the raise that we received here on the main river. Rodney is heading that way this morning some with some guests so I will have a better report tonight.

Tight Lines!!!

Mike Small with a nice salmon taken on #6 Ally Shrimp.

Dr. Scott Boley with a hard fighting 22 lb salmon. I wasnt sure who was going to give up first but in the end Scott was victorious. Scott has been fishing here for over 50 years and he still cant believe how many fish are in the river. When you hear this from someone who fished here as long as he did and he has seen it all good an bad it is very encouraging and sure makes you feel like conservation is finally paying off.

We cant ask for much more the river is at a good level and there are tons of fish in the river and for some odd reason they started taking the past couple of days. I am not sure what turned them on if it was the cool fall air or all the leaves on the water? I had one guest out on Wednesday evening and in 2 hours we moved 8 fish and landed 4. Two nice salmon in the 15 lb range and two fiesty grilse. All of our pools are full of fish and if your lucky enough to be there when they turn on you can have the time of your life. Bob L limited out yesterday morning before he left for home, he had 4 nice fish and 3 of them were very fresh, a couple having sea lice. We had a little rain last night and some more forecasted for Sunday which should help shake things up.

Tight lines!!!

Denise and Todd Youmans with a nice hookbill salmon.

This is the moose me and Calvin O’Donnell got last Thursday it had 25 points and weighed over 1100lbs field dressed. The hunt didn’t last long and I am glad as the weather was very poor.(Pictuerd is Caleb Veno and Derek Munn)

The water is finally down to a great level, it is the lowest it has been in almost 2 months. It is at a near perfect level and temperature for the last few weeks of the season. All of our pools are holding a ton of fish they are jumping everywhere from bank to bank in the pools. They’re not taking as well as we would like but there is enough action to keep you interested and the fish that we are hooking are nice salmon in the 12-20lb range with odd grilse being landed as well. We are catching a few fresh fish but for the most part they are fish that been around for awhile. There is reports of a lot of fish down river and they are getting into good numbers of fresh fish, so thats a good sign for the camps up in our area. The Cain’s has a lot of fish but it is the same storey a lot of jumpers but not many takers. The water is a little low on the Cain’s and as bad as I hate to say it a nice 12 inch raise would do it some good.

Tight lines!

Derek Munn

Carol Fargher with her fisrt salmon a beautiful 16lb hookbill. She wore her lucky hat and it and worked on her last evening of fishing. Nice fish Carol see you next season.

Jay Fagher with a 20lb hen salmon…the expression says it all. Way to go Jay!!!!
