fished at many places in Montana, Quebec, New
Brunswick and Scotland, but none have provided
the hospitality, service and exquisite facilities
that we have enjoyed at Ledges Inn. In addition,
we had the good fortune to enjoy superb fishing.
Ignoring those lost to our incompetence, we
brought to net 10 grilse, and 3 salmon including
a 20 pound beautiful bright female. With
Gods help we will return."

Spring Fishing
The Atlantic salmon spends the
winter beneath the ice of the river and begins to head
back to the ocean shortly after the ice is out. As a
result the spring fishery has a small window of
opportunity, about 3 weeks duration after the ice is out
of the river.
The Miramichi River comes alive
each year on April 15 with the sound of motor boats
traveling its high, fast waters, the sound of ice runs
crashing into shore, and the sight of anglers standing in
their boats, rods bowed with the weight of a hungry
Atlantic salmon on the other end. The splashing, rushing,
reeling that follows is nothing but pure adrenalin until
the mighty fish is netted.
The spring fishery is an exciting
one as the salmon are hungry, restless after a winter
under ice, and although they are skinny from not eating,
they are a fierce competitor once hooked.
A typical day of spring fishing
begins with a hearty breakfast and a fresh cup of coffee
in the dining room. Your guide pulls their 15h.p. motor
boat directly up to shore in front of the Inn anytime
after 8:00 to pick up you up. Your guide travels you to
various spots along the river, staying for a while where
its successful fishing, finding a new spot when its
not successful. You come back to the Inn for a warm
lunch, and then on to the river for the afternoon. The
typical spring fishing day usually ends between 4 and 5
pm, depending on the guests preference (and
success).
Summer and Fall Fishing
Beginning
in mid-June, the Atlantic salmon and various trout begin
their return from the ocean to the rivers and streams of
their origin to spawn on the upriver gravel beds. Salmon
travel all summer beginning in mid-late June until the
end of the season. This is when the skill of the fly
fisher is up against the greatest challenge.
The
key to successful summer fishing is the pool you fish in.
When the summer heat arrives, the water temperatures rise and the
water level drops. The salmon converge in cold water
pools to better tolerate these conditions. The Ledges Inn
offers its guests some of the best cold water pools on
the Miramichi River. Some of these include Flo's Pool and
Harris Ledge Pool, both privately owned, meaning only
Ledges Inn guests have access to it.. Flos Pool is
renowned for its success by fishermen, from the novice to
the expert.
Another key to successful summer
fishing is the guide you fish with. The Ledges Inn guides
have years of experience in the art of fly fishing and
are very good at passing their skills along to you. Your
guide is very knowledgeable of the fish behavior in the
river and the flies to use for the conditions. All of
this expertise goes a long way in making your fishing
experience more enjoyable and successful.
A typical day of summer fishing
begins early in the morning after a light breakfast.
Picture being on the beautiful Miramichi River just after
day break, the sun rising into the purple sky, a fine
mist over the water, and salmon jumping all around you.
You and your guide fish until late morning until the
salmon settle into the heat of the day. You return back
to the Inn for a brunch and rest for the afternoon while
its too hot to fish. Late afternoon you and your
guide go back to the river, when once again the fish come
alive, jumping, rolling, biting, and fighting. After
sunset, you return to the Inn to enjoy a 4-course gourmet
supper with fellow fishers and a bottle of fine wine and
talk of your catches of the day.

Hook & Release
The Ledges Inn proudly supports
the Atlantic Salmon Federation and the Miramichi Salmon
Association in their conservation efforts to
ensure the continuing viability of Atlantic salmon
stocks. As such, the Ledges Inn and its guides encourage
fishing guests to practice a "Hook and Release"
philosophy. Special hook and release fishing licenses are
available at the Inn for the growing number of fishermen
supporting this important conservation effort.
